M4T - From a vision to the production of the future

Sto SE & Co. KGaA

At Sto SE & Co. KGaA, a major international manufacturer of products and systems for building coatings, M4T stands for Manufacturing for Tomorrow. This abbreviation is part of a project name in which the automation technology of the production facilities at several sites is to be made fit for the future. Together with KRIKO as a specialist for Siemens PCS 7 control technology, Sto has successfully modernized the first and largest production plant. KRIKO's extensive experience in automation technology, as well as the partnership-based cooperation, guaranteed success.

[Translate to English:] Projekt Sto Prozessleittechnik

Requirements for KRIKO:

  • Maintain short downtimes
  • Intelligent, multi-stage conversion concept
  • Reliable start-up after each conversion step
  • Precise, self-learning dosing
  • High quality standards
  • Reproducibility of the end product
  • Simple, user-friendly operation
  • High level of safety for man and machine

The KRIKO solution

Production 3 is located at the Stühlingen site in the Weizen district, where the majority of pasty products such as paints and plasters are manufactured for the European market. The entire electrical and control technology, including the cabling, was replaced by KRIKO at the plant, which was commissioned in 1980. In order to be equipped for Industry 4.0, intelligent sensors and actuators were installed and integrated via PROFINET and IO-Link. A powerful connection to the MES (Manufacturing Execution System) was also integrated.

During the first conversion phase around the turn of the year 2019/2020, the outdated Siemens S5 controllers were replaced within a few days. The majority of the S5 I/O peripherals were retained in this first step. In a second conversion step, the I/O peripherals and field devices were gradually replaced over several weekends without disrupting the production process. The short time frames required reliable installation preparation and execution.

The basis for the successful conversion was formed by joint workshops between KRIKO, Sto and other partners. This also guarantees the successful rollout, in which M4T is to be implemented uniformly at all locations. Sto continues to rely on KRIKO's performance and has commissioned the next stage of the M4T project in Donaueschingen from KRIKO.
