The Swiss watch is a household name around the world, as it combines precision and accuracy in the smallest of spaces. A paper machine (PM), on the other hand, is a colossus. But here, too, the accuracy of the mechanical and electrical control systems is crucial. Following the successful renewal of the winder 4, Perlen Papier AG has once again chosen KRIKO Engineering as its project partner for the modernization of the PM 4.
Requirements for KRIKO
Renewal of the drive control system
New drive control system based on PCS 7
Connection of the drive control system to the existing ALSPA system
Creation of a risk assessment
Replacement of all safety-relevant components
Conversion time until start of production only 14 days
Details Paper Machine 4
Production speed 1,600 m/min, 5.32 m working width
For LWC papers from 40 - 80 g/m²
Voith Duoformer TQV, speed sizer, calender, 6-roll Janus calender, Sirius combination reel
65 drives with outputs between 15 kW and 750 kW
The KRIKO solution
There was a lively exchange at project management level throughout the entire duration of the project. By involving the operators in the ongoing project, suggestions, changes and requests could be implemented at an early stage. The new control system was made available to the operating team for familiarization a few months before commissioning. The system was ready to run using a drive simulation and was already fully integrated into the customer's IT environment.
Technologies used
Perlen Papier opted for ABB ACS880 inverters. KRIKO optimized the spare parts inventory in terms of costs and clarity by using the same modules for inverters and power feed/feedback units for outputs above 400 kW. The drive control is based on the Siemens PCS 7 process control system and the proven drive modules from the KRIKO DCS library. PM 4 and the rolling machine therefore use the same drive system. The machine can be fully operated via local panels. The KRIKO drive control system was coupled with the existing ALSPA process control system. An analysis tool for PM 4 provides quick trends for analyzing process and drive variables.
The replacement of 42 m of control cabinets with four feeds took just six days. After twelve days, the machine was ready for "stock on the wire". After two more days, sellable paper was already on the Sirius reel. Since then, the PM 4 has been running reliably 24 hours a day. Just like a clock, a project like this also has a coordinated gear train. Perlen Papier AG, KRIKO Engineering GmbH and all the other companies involved worked together in a spirit of trust and made the project a success. Thanks to this teamwork, PM 4 is now running like a Swiss watch again.
