PCS 7 migration with minimal downtimes

Cerdia GmbH

The Cerdia Group, headquartered in Basel, is a globally active company in the chemical industry. The Freiburg site produces cellulose acetate, a versatile bio-based polymer made from natural resources that is biodegradable.

The existing PCS 7 process control system had to be migrated from version 7.0 to version 9.1 in order to meet the latest technological standards. It was also necessary to switch from the outdated standard library to the Advanced Process Library (APL).

Requirements for KRIKO

  • Step-by-step conversion of seven control systems
  • Ensuring minimum downtimes
  • Maintaining the full functionality of the existing control system
  • Thorough understanding of the existing infrastructure
  • Careful planning of the migration process
  • Comprehensive inventory and precise analysis as the basis for the migration plan and schedule
  • Monitoring of all steps to identify and resolve problems at an early stage

The KRIKO Solution

The update and transition to APL was carried out successfully. Based on a factory acceptance test and site acceptance test, it was ensured that all functions were working properly. Extremely short downtimes were achieved thanks to a parallel setup and successive commissioning of all automation systems. To ensure network security, a DMZ was set up as a secure transition zone between IT and OT. Network segmentation was also implemented to prevent direct connections between the company's IT and the OT network of the solution provider.
