Retrofit of a winder

DS Smith Deutschland GmbH

KRIKO has experience in retrofitting winders. Our customer DS Smith also owns such a fully automatic model athlete - a Voith prototype that needed to be modernized. We carried out the modernization. The winder is characterized by impressive performance data:

  • 3500 m/min fast
  • Working width 7.6 m
  • Reel diameter 4.16 m = 75 tons of paper
  • A reel change time of 45s

A challenge in every respect, even for a company like KRIKO, which has already modernized over 50 reel machines from various manufacturers. The aim of the modernization was to simplify maintenance. The drive system was to be converted to a commercially available system so that any faults that occurred could be rectified as quickly as possible, even without the manufacturer's support.

Challenges of the customer

  • the winder has a fully automatic reel spool and reel change with 10 positioning axes
  • an unwind drive with 1260 kW with 2-fold overload during braking and acceleration processes
  • positioning of the carrier roll from full run with full reel spool accurate to +/- 2.5 mm
  • an existing drive program written in "C", i.e. virtually a black box
  • the replacement of ultra-compact water-cooled converters with a standard ABB ACS880 drive switchgear in the same space

The KRIKO solution

The project was implemented according to our and the customer's specifications. The switchgear was replaced in just 4 days. The drive commissioning of the main drives and the positioning axes also took place within the scheduled time. Admittedly, positioning to +/- 2.5 mm was more difficult than expected. The challenge with retrofitting is always that you only have the chance to test various functions during commissioning. However, thanks to the experience of our engineers, a solution was found here too - the accuracy could be maintained. The interaction with the PCS 7 auxiliary operation program turned out to be more complex than expected. However, our employees were also able to crack this nut thanks to their broad-based specialist knowledge.

With this Voith reeling machine at DS Smith and the previously modernized Beloit Arcus reeling machine at Perlen Papier, KRIKO has breathed new life into the two fastest reeling machines in Europe. This is something we are proud of!
